Thorny path of “Mistral”

After joining the Crimea to Russia in March of this year, Russian military cooperation with other countriesreduced drastically. Being an organization, NATO employed a number of actions directed to thetermination of military cooperation with Russia. Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the General Secretary ofAlliance, recommended all participant countries to do the same when there were talks about sales ofFrench helicopter carriers “Mistral” to Russia and training of Russian quick reaction troops by Franceand Germany. It was also claimed that it is worthwhile to buy all “Mistrals” by NATO countries in orderto make it unaffordable for selling them to Russia. The key point was to break military and technicalnegotiations between Russia and Western Europe countries. It can be reached even by disrupt of contract. So, currently this is a real situation with “Mistrals”. However, the situation is not as simple as itseems, and for the USA it is complicated to command Europe, like its own farm.

Рисунок анонса MILITARY SMALL ARMS

Whatever the development of armament and equipment or ‘new generation wars’ theories accepted, small arms will remain the most widespread in all branches and services of armed forces. Small armsand light grenade launchers are the most effective during local wars and counterterrorist operationsbeing the main military conflicts of the modern age. In such situations destruction of enemy’sdispersed manpower is more important than seizure or destruction of infrastructure facilities. 20-thcentury wars and conflicts experience has proved it is separate units who play the key role in the mostof engagements; meanwhile engagements take place in no long distances, in a sudden manner andfrequently in constrained conditions. Furthermore small arms now account for up to 70% personneltargets killed. In a large-scale war small arms are also becoming the main weapons in town, woods, mountain battles when other means have limited capacity. Diversity and quick change of battle conditions, targets and missions profile require weapons of various combat characteristics being available. In modern armed conflicts it is not only army participating but law enforcement agencies armed units;key role is played by special force units belonging to different security agencies. These agencies specificnature, availability of own supply systems and, finally, own concept of weapon capacities define awide range of armament used. Although in Russia the whole scale of small arms and grenade launchersare produced in recent years security agencies for various reasons have been using foreign models aswell. Deterioration of economic situation in Russia in 1990’s and perpetual reforms during the 21-stcentury first decade have led to even new army-accepted models being ordered in very small quantities. As a result there are different generations of small arms put into service. Let us have a look at smallarms used by security agencies and some that are available for operation.

Military air-cushionedlanding ships (craft) arethe most unique variationof the amphibiouslanding ships. They arebased on small- to mid-displacementmulti-purpose hovercraft and sometimesknown as ‘over the beach’craft. Technically, hovercraft is a craftcapable of traveling over surfaces bymeans of a specially created cushionof slow moving, high-pressureair which is ejected against the surfacebelow and contained withina so-called ‘skirt’. Due to a cushionof air, hovercraft or air-cushion landingship is capable to travel equallywell over land, ice, and water. Shipsof this type provide military plannerswith the opportunity to conduct amphibiousoperations in a wider rangeof regions of the World, and allowtroops and material to access morethan 70% of the World's coastline, comparing with only 15% of thatcoastline available for amphibiousoperations with conventional, nonair-cushion landing ships and craft.
